A Handy Guide to Choosing the Perfect Crate

How to find your pet’s new home

While it might seem logical to adhere to a ‘bigger is better’ philosophy, that’s seldom the rule when selecting the perfect crate size. Too big or too open and your pup may decide to install a bathroom. Not good. Too small and they’ll feel cramped in their new den.

That’s why Lucky Dog® offers an array of sizes—many with unique door options or adjustable / removable partitions. A real money-saver for puppy owners, this allows you to select one crate size and adapt their space as they grow. For mature dogs, consider a standard size that fits both your little buddy, your lifestyle and spatial constraints.

As always, we’re here to help, so never hesitate to contact us with questions. We’ll get back to you ASAP.

Measure Your Dog's LengthMeasure Your Dog's Length

Step one: Measure your pet’s length.

With your dog on all four legs, measure them from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, then add 2 to 4 inches. Note: Accounting for tail length might seem like a good idea, but that risks making the crate too large.

Step two: Measure your pet’s height.

With your dog in the sit position, measure from the floor to the top of their head, again adding 2 to 4 inches.

Step three: That’s it. You’re ready to start shopping.

Regarding width, we’ve done that work for you based on length and height measurements. With your measurements in hand, have a look at the many safe and secure Lucky Dog® options.

A Word On Weight

As you narrow down your Lucky Dog® crate options, take care to double-check whether your dog falls under our recommended weight limits.

That way, you’ll always have the option to carry the crate with your dog safely inside.
